In this first issue of Small Histories, a series of zines in which I do deep dives into particular aspects of queer history and culture, I explore the history of the handkerchief code, also known as flagging. This code adopted different colour handkerchiefs to signal one's kinks and fetishes and came about in the early 70’s.

I explore the origins and ways of flagging, queer codes before the hanky code was conceived, the evolution of the code, followed by contemporary artists reinventing and reigniting the code today.
